davante adams takes a swipe at the bears.Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan rejected claims from Green Bay Packers players that he celebrated while receiver Davante Adams lay still on the field after a helmet-to-helmet collision in Week 4 — a hit that resulted in a one-game suspension.
“I don’t care what any of them said,” Trevathan stated Wednesday. “I know what I did. It is what it is. I never wish harm on anyone. I was only trying to make a play, so people can take it how they want.”
Former Bear, now Packers tight end, Martellus Bennett, was the loudest critic of Trevathan after the contest.
“What bothered us the most was that he was celebrating that play,” Bennett said after the Packers’ 35-14 victory. “You get your ass beat, you take a cheap shot, and then you celebrate when a guy goes down. That’s what really ticked us off.”
Adams had gone down motionless after the brutal hit, but surprisingly didn’t miss the following game.
The NFL announced Trevathan broke Rule 12, Section 2, Article 6, which states: “There shall be no unnecessary roughness. This includes, but is not limited to, using any part of a player’s helmet or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily.”
Initially, the league handed down a two-game suspension, but after an appeal, it was cut to just one. Trevathan sat out Chicago’s Monday night home game against Minnesota but was back at the facility Wednesday as the team prepared for Sunday’s matchup at Baltimore.
Trevathan admitted he understood the reasoning for the suspension, yet insisted he won’t change his playing style.
“They made their decision and I have to respect it,” Trevathan said. “My argument was that it wasn’t on purpose. I wasn’t trying to lower my head to injure him, I was simply making a play. It is what it is.
“But no, I don’t plan on changing the way I play. I just need to be more cautious in those situations. But I can’t let that slow me down. I’ve been playing this game for a long time.”
According to Trevathan, he and Adams are on good terms now after exchanging text messages the previous week. Adams returned for Green Bay’s Week 5 game at Dallas, catching two touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 11 seconds remaining.
“I just reached out and told him I hope he’s good,” Trevathan explained. “I wanted him to know I wasn’t trying to injure him. He was really cool about it. He plays hard, he plays well. He came back last week and performed great. He handled it the right way.”
