Eagles crush Chiefs’ hopes of a Super Bowl three-peat with a statement win, powered by a ruthless defense in a 40–22 beatdown

NEW ORLEANS — The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t just win a championship — they slammed the door shut on Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ dream of three straight Super Bowl titles.

From start to finish, it was domination.

On his 22nd birthday, Cooper DeJean delivered a stunning pick-six, Josh Sweat harassed Mahomes all night, and the Eagles rolled to a 40–22 victory to claim the franchise’s second Super Bowl trophy.

Jalen Hurts accounted for three touchdowns — two through the air and one on his trademark tush-push — earning himself Super Bowl MVP honors. With Vic Fangio’s defense completely suffocating Kansas City, the Eagles never needed Saquon Barkley to take over. Even then, the star back added 57 yards and surpassed Terrell Davis for the most rushing yards in a single season including playoffs. Hurts finished with 221 passing yards.

“This game is about everyone pulling together,” coach Nick Sirianni said. “Offense, defense, special teams — every group stepped up. We never cared about outside opinions. We just focused on winning.”

With President Donald Trump becoming the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, the Eagles delivered a performance that thrilled a loud, green-covered crowd, erupting into “Fly! Eagles! Fly!” with every score.

Even Taylor Swift’s presence wasn’t enough to spark the Chiefs. They fell for the first time in 10 games with the superstar watching Kelce from a suite — and he didn’t record a catch until late in the third quarter.

For a team that had appeared in five of the last six Super Bowls, Kansas City looked unrecognizable. Mahomes had been undefeated against Fangio’s defenses until Sunday, but the veteran coordinator — now leading his hometown team — out-schemed Andy Reid every step of the way. Reid dropped to 3–3 in Super Bowls.

The Eagles sacked Mahomes six times — the most he has ever taken in a single game. Sweat alone had 2.5, and Philadelphia didn’t blitz once.

“Defense wins championships,” Hurts said afterward. “They gave us short fields and chances all night.”

Barkley was quiet early, gaining just 31 yards in the first half, but Philadelphia still built a 24–0 lead. Kansas City, hoping to become the first NFL team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era, looked stunned.

Two years ago, Hurts nearly beat Mahomes before a late Butker field goal decided it. Last year, Mahomes rallied the Chiefs past the 49ers in overtime. But this time, the Eagles’ rebuilt defense — with eight new starters since the 2022 season — refused to allow another miracle.

“It was a rough day. Nothing worked,” Reid admitted. “Turnovers, penalties, mistakes — against a team this good, it’s too much.”

Sirianni, who had been mocked earlier in the season during chants of “Fire Nick!” and even called a “clown” on national TV, capped off his redemption arc with a Gatorade bath as backup QB Kenny Pickett closed out the game.

Philadelphia opened the scoring with a classic push-sneak from the 1-yard line. After a field goal made it 10–0, Sweat and Jalyx Hunt recorded back-to-back sacks, setting up DeJean’s 38-yard pick-six — Mahomes’ first in 21 playoff games and his first interception in 297 attempts.

“I didn’t play like myself,” Mahomes said. “The turnovers were on me.”

Zack Baun added another interception before Hurts hit A.J. Brown on a 12-yard strike, pushing the lead to 24–0. Later, Hurts dropped a perfect 46-yard bomb to DeVonta Smith to stretch the lead to 34–0.

Mahomes threw three touchdowns late — including two to Xavier Worthy and DeAndre Hopkins — but they were little more than window dressing.

Controversial officiating chatter lingered all week, and an early offensive pass interference call on Brown drew criticism from analysts like Tom Brady and Mike Pereira. Philly got its own gift soon after with a questionable roughness flag on Trent McDuffie, leading to another Hurts touchdown.

Hurts’ streak of 217 pass attempts without an interception ended in the first half, but Kansas City failed to take advantage.

The only teams ever to win three straight NFL championships remain the pre-Super Bowl Packers — in both 1929–31 and 1965–67 — and the last American pro team to three-peat in any major league remains the 2000–02 Lakers, led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
