Texans Defense Secures Win Over Bears
In the second half, when C.J. Stroud and Houston’s attack found it difficult to move the chains, the Texans’ defense delivered on Sunday night to secure a 19-13 triumph over the Chicago Bears. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was intercepted twice after halftime, and Houston managed to hold on. “Winning comes one week at a time,” said coach DeMeco Ryans. “Games aren’t always perfect, but it’s about finding ways to finish. That’s what makes me proud — no matter how it looked late, our guys pulled it off.”
Stroud and Fairbairn Lead the Offense
Stroud finished with 260 yards through the air and one touchdown, while Kaʹimi Fairbairn drilled four field goals to push Houston to victory. He connected from 56, 47, 59, and 53 yards, and the Texans’ defense constantly pressured Williams. “It’s always enjoyable going after any QB,” defensive end Will Anderson Jr. said after recording 1.5 sacks.
Collins’ Touchdown Gives Texans the Edge
Stroud’s 28-yard scoring strike to Nico Collins put Houston up 10-3 early in the second quarter, and the Texans carried a 16-10 edge into halftime. After the break, Houston only managed another field goal, but the defense made it stand. Williams, the No. 1 overall draft pick, went 23-of-37 for 174 yards and was taken down seven times.
Bears’ Rookie QB Faces Growing Pains
“He found ways to escape pressure a couple of times, but he must take care of the ball when he does,” Bears coach Matt Eberflus explained. “These are learning experiences for him.”
Late Scare and Houston’s Defensive Stand
Houston nearly let it slip when Cam Akers fumbled at the 4-yard line with six and a half minutes left, but Chicago recovered. Cairo Santos nailed a 54-yarder to cut the lead to 19-13 with under three minutes remaining. After a quick Houston punt, Williams was sacked on second down and his final attempt on fourth fell incomplete, sealing the game.
Collins Shines Despite Mixon’s Struggles
“We didn’t execute as needed,” Williams admitted. “I’ll improve — it’s a long season, and I’m still learning.”
Collins posted 135 receiving yards, giving him back-to-back 100-yard outings, even as Joe Mixon, slowed by an ankle issue, gained just 25 rushing yards after leading the league with 159 in Week 1. Neither side scored in the third quarter until Fairbairn’s 53-yarder extended Houston’s advantage to 19-10 early in the fourth. That kick followed a Stingley interception when Williams was hit on release. On the next drive, Williams scrambled free but tossed another pick, this one hauled in by rookie Kamari Lassiter.
Texans Take Control Before Halftime
Houston had taken the lead for good on Collins’ touchdown in the second quarter, shortly after he was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct in a skirmish with Tyrique Stevenson. The Texans stretched it to 13-3 with Fairbairn’s 47-yard kick. Stroud showed his poise on that series with an on-the-run 18-yard completion to Collins despite being hit.
Chicago finally broke through with its first offensive touchdown of the season — a 2-yard run by Khalil Herbert just before the half, making it 13-10. That drive was aided by a defensive pass interference call on rookie Calen Bullock at the 6. A 59-yard field goal from Fairbairn gave Houston a 16-10 halftime cushion.
Injuries
Bears DT Zacch Pickens exited with a groin injury. WR Keenan Allen sat out due to a heel issue.
Special Teams Spotlight
Fairbairn, who hit three 50+ yard field goals last week, became the first NFL player with five or more from that range in a two-game stretch. “Nobody praises him enough,” Ryans said. “He’s the biggest reason we’ve won these games.”
